
Braai Broodjies
Ingredients
- 1 Loaf Of White Bread
- Butter (not margarine or other tasteless substitute)
- Basil Pesto
- White Cheddar Cheese (grated)
- Mozzarella Cheese (grated)
- Red Onion (sliced wafer thin)
- Ripe Tomatoes
- Salt & Black Pepper (to taste)
Instructions
- Generously butter the outside of each slice. This will make for a golden luxurious finish. Besides, there is enough fat (cheese) on the inside – add flavour to the outside.
- Layer ingredients in the order described below.
- Thinly spread some basil pesto – not too much or will dominate the flavour.
- Never hold back on the cheese, the grid will keep it all together – 2/3 white cheddar combined with 1/3 mozzarella.
- Medium slices of ripe tomato. Salt & Pepper is added on top of the tomato.
- Wafer-thin red onion slices – again, not too much.
- Jan Braai says “’n braaibroodjie is ’n draaibroodjie” – very, very true. Turn every 30 seconds and keep doing so until golden brown. This is the only way to get the cheese melted and the broodjie evenly cooked without burning it.
- Serve immediately and Enjoy!
